Anyway, I am back in this lovely building doing another course, but I no longer have my own office with high back leather chair dreaming I was on a desert island somewhere (Cuba) with my laptop, irn bru and cigs. And of course my NCIS dvds, my folders and a few items of clothing.
If only I could escape the confines of this place and relax by a pool with unlimited internet access!
Alas, this is not the case and it seems the only way I will ever go to Cuba is in my dreams and certains eps of my beloved show.
You may ponder why I am so crazy over this thing, but with everything that's happening right now, I watch that and I can block out all the crap and focus on the good times Gibbs has with his team.
It's crazy, I know, but you'd do the same if your grandmother didn't know who you were 9 times out of 10.

Good shopping day. I have bought two books that I've actually already read, but that I love and now I just need a spare moment (well, a week) to re-read them. One is Doris Lessing's The Golden Notebook, which I read in Slovene and loved the style of the writing and as I'm assuming style tends to be hard to translate, I'm convinced the English original is going to blow me away. Little snippet from the beginning:

"We're so different in every way," said Molly, "it's odd. I suppose because we both live the same kind of life - not getting married and so on. That's all they see."
"Free women," said Anna, wryly. She added, with an anger new to molly, so that she earned another quick scrutinising glance from her friend: "They still define us in terms of relationships with men, even the best of them."
"Well, we do, don't we?" said Molly, rather tart. "Well, it's awfully hard not to," she amended, hastily, because of the look of surprise Anna now gave her. There was a short pause, during which the women did not look at each other but reflected that a year apart was a long time, even for an old friendship.
Molly said at last, sighing: "Free. Do you know, when I was away, I was thinking about us, and I've decided that we're a completely new type of woman. We must be, surely?"
"There's nothing new under the sun," said Anna, in an attempt at a German accent.

The other is Primo Levi's collection of short stories, The Periodic Table. The only other thing I've read by him is The Drowned and the Saved  and some poetry, though I've had If This is a Man / The Truce on my bookshelf for probably around three years now, I cannot force myself to get past the preface, because I know that once I've read it, I'll be thoroughly depressed and even more misanthropic than I already am. But anyway, the thing with me with Primo Levi is that he is the only prose writer (this happens often with poetry) that I - and I realize this sounds odd - really feel the presence of in his writing, it's like he's right there, whispering in my ear in this gruff but soft masculine voice. My favourite passage - from "Carbon":

It is again among us, in a glass of milk. It is inserted in a very complex, long chain, yet such that almost all of its links are acceptable to the human body. It is swallowed; and since every living structure harbors a savage distrust toward every contribution of any material of living origin, the chain is meticulously broken apart and the fragments one by one, are accepted or rejected. One, the one that concerns us, crosses the intestinal threshold and enters the bloodstream: it migrates, knocks at the door of a nerve cell, enters, and supplants the carbon which was part of it. This cell belongs to a brain, and it is my brain, the brain of the me who is writing; and the cell in question, and within it the atom in question, is in charge of my writing, in a gigantic minuscule game which nobody has yet described. Ok, I am 17 now, and I have been suffering from migraines since I was 15. They weren't as bad when I was younger, but over the year they have progressed and become more severe. I am pretty sure mine is hormone related. They make super-fun dance rock with an endearingly nostalgic edge, they have one of the best-named tracks of 2008 (“I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You”) and, as far as we know, they’re not doing it all for the nookie.

Даже звук цокота копыт имеется:) Из редакции выносят накопившийся хлам и моют всё, до чего могут дотянуться. Протёрла тоже пол в своей комнате, подоконник, стол и всё что на нём. Теперь обстановка стала отчётливо и невыносимо пахнуть сырой хорошо выполосканной чистой тряпкой. Набрызгала всюду освежителем воздуха, стянутым из туалета, гаденько, но вроде ничего. Сижу и чувствую - воскресеньем пахнет. А я когда была маленькая, суббота была единственным днём, когда всё семейство собиралась одновременно под одной крышей и никто никуда не спешил. Первая поговорка, которую я самостоятельно сконструировала была "суббота - работа." И правда в субботу с раннего утра мама бабушка папа и дед начинали мыть, стирать, выбивать ковры, что-то красить и шумно пылесосить зелёным, полным пыли, важности и исторического значения, агрегатом "Ракета". Так от постиранное в субботу бельё высыхало к утру воскресенья и этот огромный ворох простыней, полотенец, наволочек и пододеяльников наваливался на диване, в центре этого снопа садился папа, раскладывал тяжеленную гладильную доску с железными ногами и начинал гладить. Я их помню отлично. Противно-солнечные сырые зимние утра, капающие сосульки и густой запах глаженых белых простыней. Воскресенье, одним словом. О чём это я. Так вот у нас освежитель воздуха с запахом свежего накрахмаленного глаженого белья! Пошла посмотреть: и правда, на флаконе нарисовано глаженое бельё и запах тоже белья. Таке. Today has been a total failure. I went to the courthouse with my oh so sometimes lovely class this morning, hoping to witness a juicy fist fight between a soon to be divorced couple. This did not happen, I am sad to say, but what did happen was (and hold on to your hats now, ‘ol folk!) nothing. Not much, anyway.
The first trial got cancelled since the offended didn’t show up, so we had to sit and wait for a fucking half hour for the next one. This pissed me off somewhat. The second trial was about an immigrant, and that one ended fairly quick. Let’s say ten minutes. I was gravely disappointed. Then, and this brought all of the students hopes up again, there was a trial involving two young girls, alcohol, and of course a car. Great? I say not! They kindly asked us not to attend, and since we are a very humble class we went home instead.
So what did I get out of the visit? N O T H I N G. I missed classes, that’s what I did. And I’m most probably having a nervous breakdown because of it. ‘Cause not only did I miss the classes this morning, thus slipping behind the rest of the class, but I also was home last week with the flu. I’ve missed a tremendous amount of school work. “Please, kill me!” would be a nice sentence to come out of my mouth right now. Well, that, or I could try and study. That’s obviously not happening though, considering I’m writing in my livejournal. I really need to get my priorities straight. Well, the beginning was only mediocore. Mary had me come over to the bed and breakfast early to meet some college kids who, she thought, did theatre. Turns out they didn't, but they were still pretty nice. After that I started work. The lady I normally work with, Luchare, was off today, so I worked with Libby... Libby doesn't talk. At all. At least, not with me. So yeah, it was basically one, giant, four hour awkward silence... Not fun. But then it picked up.

After work I ran over to the OSF box office and got a great seat for tonight's performance of A View From The Bridge. I've been hearing great things about it so, naturally, I really wanted to see it, and I couldn't believe it wasn't sold out. After getting the ticket I headed back to Mary's place. I basically was lazy and rewatched Much Ado About Nothing for a couple hours, before finally getting ready to go. I had dinner at the Standing Stone by myself, which made me sad since I hate eating by myself. Afterwards, I headed over to the Green Show but came in at the very end. Then I spotted Monica and we had a nice long chat about summer, school starting, and OSF. I then headed into my show.

And oh... my... God...

At this point in my life, I've seen so many plays that barely anything takes me by surprise. Usually I'm really good at predicting what's going to happen next. But this one... except for the very end of the show, I had no idea what was going to happen (the ending was just sort of predictable when it comes to Arthur Miller... hint: he likes main character deaths). But this show was amazing. It kept me on the edge of my seat, literally! I know we all say "wow, that play had me on the edge of my seat" but how often do we really mean it? And not only that, but I gasped. Out loud. Shows don't normally make me gasp out loud. Sure, sometimes my jaw will drop open or I'll be taken by surprise, but this show made my hands fly to my face and I actually, literally gasped.Vilma was great, David was great, Stephanie was great, and Juan was great (and cute). But Armando? He stole the show. How couldn't he? So yeah, this is the best Arthur Miller play I've ever witnessed. Basically.

Afterwards I found Monica and sort of just hung onto her. Monica, sorry for being an awkward lurker around you. I obviously have no one down here to hang out with and I've been pretty lonely, so to have someone that I'm friends with around me so suddenly... I get clingy. Anyways, Monica went off her sepreate way, as did all of her friends, which left me and this guy named Brad. Brad and I had overheard Monica and some other people mentioning this theatre event happening at the Black Swan where a bunch of OSF actors were getting together and putting on short plays and a group of them would do improv. We figured so long as we said we were guests of Monica we could get in (we did get in and we weren't asked who we were with). But that was an hour and a half before it began. So he asked if I wanted to go with him to buy cigarettes. Yes ladies, I broke rule #1: I got in the car with a strange man. But y'know, as long as the strange man is gay I feel about 98% sure nothing bad's going to happen to me.

Brad's really nice. He's going to be a sophomore this year at SOU. He told me about wanting to be a costume designer and how much fun SOU is. Then he basically gave me the lowdown on the theatre department. The entire lowdown. What to avoid, who to rub elbows with, classes to take, people to please, friends to make, etc. etc. etc. It was great, and really nice of him. So yeah, I guess he's sort of a friend now. We're not real buddies are anything, we just sort of hung out together. At 12:00 we headed over to the Black Swan.

And, once more, oh... my... God!

What we saw there was amazing! In a single hour and a half we witnessed four short plays, all comedies, and an improv group. It was one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen! My favorite one act was the second one called "Sure Thing". It involved David Desantos hitting on a girl, and every time he messed up a bell would ring and he'd start from before he messed up. It had lots of really funny lines. Stephanie in the one play about mini golfing was hysterical. But what really stole the cake was the improv group. It consisted of lots of OSF actors (such as John Tufts, Tasso, Mark Bedard, etc.). They were astounding. John and Marko (sp?) did a really great sketch that took place in a Walmart and Marko was turned on by weird noises John made. And Tasso pretending to be an angry dog? Nice. I also liked John's impression of Willy Wanka. Or Mark and Neil's priest sketch! Ha, yeah, it was awesome... if you couln't tell...

So yeah! That was my awesome day! It's now about a quarter after 2:00 and I work at 10:00. So I'm off to bed. Tomorrow (technically today) I think I'll just come back here after work and read/watch movies. Night all!

Воно звісно невелике досягнення, коли дівка в 21 рік навчилася плавати, але для мене - велика радість. тепер я точно знаю, що не потону. Поки що плаваю, як жабка - руки нарізно, ноги нарізно, і взагалі - кумедно мубть це все виглядає. І по собачачому (чи як там) теж пливаю. Треба удосконалити навики, і навчитися гребти та плавати на спині.

Joe was sprawled out on the couch of the tourbus, asleep, his eyes shut and his chest moving up and down gently as the bus bumped over stones and gravel in the dusty Arizona road.  His eyes moved behind his eyelids, the pupils panning over imaginary dream sequences. 

Kevin sat across from Joe at the kitchen table, a paper on the table in front of him, pretending to read it.  Instead, he was focused on Joe, his eyes burning holes into Joe's body as Kevin's hungry gaze traveled up and down it.

Nick sat with Frankie, his hands on an XBox controller, completely focused on the game in front of him except when he looked up and grinned, seeing the onesided exchange going on in front of him. 

The tourbus hit a particularly large bump in the road.  Joe was lifted off of the couch, Kevin's coffee spilled over his paper, and Nick's XBox froze up simultaniously.

Joe woke up, grumbling at having been awoken.  Kevin stood up, cursing as the hot coffee soaked more and more into his pants.  Nick flopped down, having to now crawl under the television to get to the XBox and try and fix it.

While Nick was distracted, Joe met Kevin's eye, and grinned. As previously reported, Saturday ran quite far into Sunday morning. I wasn't going to let this shrink my available Sunday, so I got up before 8am, draging myself into the kitchen for a coffee. I'd got plans for Sunday, plans that involved eating, gaming and then more eating, maybe with some watching of TV to add variety. That's right, I'd fought tiredness to get up early, in order to do precisely nothing. I'd intendted to call Dad, his latest course of Chemo started on Friday. I planned to call Mum. I didn't get round to doing either. I'd emailed Giles, to set up a telephone chat, via Skype. We'd almost made it but for the fact that I can't hear when a call comes through because I only have a headset, and no proper speakers plugged into my phone PC. He's and the precipice of fatherhood, his wife Jackie is due to delivery child in the next 2 days. I'd hoped to speak to him before he undergoes the transmogrification into a 'Dad'. I'm left wondering if I will recognise the 'new' Giles... The Week Nick's now handling comms related content, leaving me as the solitary writer for project related copy. Gulp! There's a lot to do. Наташа Милошевич 8 ноября 1900 г. исполнилось 100 лет со дня основания Псковского Археологического общества (ПАО). Вначале группа любителей старины при Псковском Статистическом Комитете - в конце 1860-х и начале 1870-х годов, затем с 1872 г. Археологическая Комиссия при том же Комитете – таков путь дореволюционного псковского краеведения до основания ПАО. Общество возникло не на пустом месте: и до его основания в XIX в. проводились археологические наблюдения и раскопки силами местных краеведов. Достаточно указать на Е. Болховитинова, Н. К. Богушевского, К. Г. Евлентьева, И. Ф. Годовикова. Деятельность Общества была разносторонней: собирание древностей и раритетов, книг, этнографических и собственно археологических материалов, издание публикаций, первые попытки охраны памятников старины и первые раскопки в черте Пскова. Список этот далеко не полон. Общество было более краеведческим, чем археологическим. Однако действовало оно довольно активно. За 38 лет своего существования ПАО выпустило 13 томов трудов, 3 каталога, путеводитель по музею, «Спутник по древнему Пскову», «Археологический указатель г. Пскова и его окрестностей» и ряд других трудов. Регулярно издавались Протоколы и Журналы заседаний ПАО. Члены Общества проводили археологические раскопки. Не случайно, что у истоков его стояли такие известные в свое время любители древности как И. И. Василев и К. Г. Евлентьев. И эта собственно археологическая сторона деятельности ПАО оценена далеко недостаточно. Сведения о различных периодах деятельности Общества неравноценны. Это связано, в частности, и с тем, что уже к 1908 г. часть архива за 1880—1886 гг. была утрачена, а эти годы - период наиболее активной деятельности ПАО. Во время гражданской войны архив ПАО был утрачен полностью, а в период Отечественной войны 1941 - 45 г.г. погибла большая часть археологических коллекций. Поэтому в истории археологической деятельности ПАО существует немало темных мест. На организацию Общества оказали непосредственное влияние раскопки великих князей 1878г. под Выбутами и Изборском, которые производились под руководством А. С. Уварова. Именно А. С. Уваровым и была высказана мысль об основании ПАО. Тогда же в принципе, поддержанная в петербургских верхах. Не случайно поэтому, что наиболее тесные отношения у деятелей ПАО были с Московским Археологическим Обществом. Члены ПАО принимали участие в некоторых всероссийских археологических съездах. Сведения о первых раскопках членов ПАО отрывочны. Так, в 1889 г. В. Н. Коленским производились археологические раскопки «близ Елеазарова монастыря». Об этом автором раскопок был прочитан реферат на одном из собраний ПАО. Ни о целях, ни о результатах этих исследований сведений нет. В 1896 г. в погосте Камно производил раскопки Ф. А. Ушаков Вероятно, был вскрыт участок вала городища. Журнал раскопок опубликован автором, отчет послан в СПб., вещи хранились в музее ПАО. Ф. А. Ушаковым же в 1897 г. была издана первая сводка археологических памятников Псковской губернии. В 1899 г. консерватор музея А. А. Заборовский производил раскопки курганов с сожжением и трупоположением у д. Тивиково и пог. Малы. Раскопки были весьма несовершенны и уже в 1913 г. другому члену ПАО, В. Н. Крейтону, многое было неясно. В. Н. Крейтон в 1912—13 г.г. производил раскопки в районе Выбут, а также у д.д. Паничьи Горки, Тивиково, Лавры и пог. Овинчище и Тайлов. Раскапывались курганы с сожжением, жальничные погребения, селище. В 1912—1914 г.г. ПАО ведет кропотливую подготовку к XVI Археологическому Съезду, который должен был состояться в Пскове, это отразилось в активизации раскопок как по линии ПАО (указан¬ные раскопки В. Н. Крейтона и раскопки В. А. Барановым-Косицким жальничных погребений в Порховском у. между дд. Лукошково и Максово) так и по линии Московского Археологического Общества (исследования В. В. Гольмстен, П. С. Рыкова, Д. Н. Эдинга, И. К. Линдемана, М. М. Воронца и В. С. Воронцова в Опочецком, Остров¬ском. Великолуцком и Холмском уездах). Кроме того, было разослано около 10 тысяч опросных листов — анкет с преимущественной ориентацией корреспондентов на археологический материал. Полученные таким путем сведения по всем уез¬дам губернии были опубликованы Н. Ф. Окулич-Казариным в 10 и 11 выпусках трудов ПАО. Материал при этом подвергся существенным сокращениям, часть данных не была использована, имели место ошибки. Однако публикации 1914—1915 г.г. пока что единствен¬ная для Псковской области сводка памятников археологии. В связи с началом первой мировой войны XVI Археологический съезд не состоялся. Организаторам съезда удалось издать в 1915 г. каталог выставки, где есть данные по ряду археологических коллекций из раскопок 1913 г. Кроме этого, около 1914 г. был издан «Каталог музея Псковского Археологического Общества», наиболее пол¬ный из всех. В числе прочих в него включены все археологические коллекции. В период гражданской войны Общество распалось. (large as it is, there is also a lot of stuff in there...) So enforced by the weather I will do a reasonable amount of detective-work in my food book (jakky bah, boooring but necessary). I had a nice long chat on the phone with Walter who was delighted to tell he has a new girl-friend and this time has the courage to go on slowly and carefully for he had a lot of bad experiences. (He is one of those who always thinks of others first, I am glad for him he stands on the first place with some one nice now himself, hope he finally gets what he deserves: a good and loving mate).
A mixed bag with a fatal flaw (for me)
I am a serious fan of the Warlords series and have owned all the turned based games and all of the BattleCry games. The first three Warlords (TB) games were seriously addictive. In fact, I still find myself playing way past the point when I should have gone to bed. I even have an old DOS system where I keep my old games and there you can find Warlords I and II (as well as x-com's, Betrayla at Krondor, Master of Magic, etc.).

In other words, I'm a fan.

Warlords IV is a beautiful game with a visually rich world like those found in BattleCry. Cities are well-rendered and interesting. Units are varied and have tactical advantages and disadvantages that are consistent with the opposing units you will fight. The combat system allows you to choose which unit you will use to fight - and it allows you to change your fight order in mid-battle (something the earlier games would not allow). The city interface is a little confusing at first, but quickly becomes easy to use. Production cues are added so that you can plan out the tactical advantages of combined unit types in advance.

The game is very challenging, but the greatest challenge occurs only in combat with cities, because those walls are always shooting at you.

Now for that flaw. I like to play large maps with lots of cities and eight sides. In this mode, the game took FOREVER to play. I would make a couple of moves, square up my cities and hit the 'end turn' button. Then I would sleep for a few hours and go out for dinner, then come back and wait for the computer to move through the AI players. (Okay, that's an exaggeration). But really, as the games progressed the turns lasted at least 5 minutes. Once, I got up and prepared a bowl of cereal as a snack - AND ATE IT - before the time was up (no lie). I play on a speedy laptop with lots of ram and I set all the game options to the fastest possible.

By the end of my first (post-tutorial) game, I would hit the 'end turn' button and set the computer aside so I could watch the news as the game moved through players. That can't be good. However, I was determined to send a powerful army to an opponent's capital to try and take it. It took a long time to create the army, 45 minutes just to get there and I still lost 7 of my 8 units. But really, I didn't care anymore. I just wanted to try. It was so boring that I didn't want to do any more, so I quit.

Now, I may try one more time, but I probably won't. I will probably just keep playing War3 and shelf this one next to the disappointing end of the x-com series.

Oh, well.

p.s. - If you are a Warlords fan, by all means get this if you can get it cheap. You might tolerate the mind numbing waits better than I did and thus enjoy the other great aspects of the game.

1. Бангкок
В столицу Таиланда я прилетаю в четверг 18го сентября в 14:34. На Бангкок у меня чуть больше суток, заказал номер в Asia Hotel Принципы выбора - нормальные деньги, не совсем хлев, рядом с кучей торговых центров, рекомендован как лично там жившими, так и Lonely Planet. Так-как музеи уже закрыты, да и перелет неблизкий, планирую легкий шопинг (МБК, Сиам Центр - все рядом, если попадется что-нибудь еще, то и его тоже) до вечера. На вечер планируется развлекательная программа. В качестве путеводителя используется вот этот отчет, хотя думаю, что Nana Plaza и Thermae Bar будет вполне достаточно. Утро будет посвящено музеям. Желательно начать пораньше, если предыдущий пункт программы позволит. Думаю ограничиться королевским районом Ko Ratnakosin и посетить Wat Phra Kaew (хразм изумрудного Будды), посмотреть на королевский дворец, заглянуть в Wat Pho (храм лежащего Будды) и Wat Arun и пофоткать рынок амулетов. После этого надо будет обедать и бежать в аэропорт. На 15:55 уже куплен билет в Сайгон, более известный как HCMC (Ho-Chi-Minh-City).

Начал молоть чепуху, задирать футболку, но в конечном итоге соизвоил сыграть. Мелкий совсем уже хотел спать, поэтому конца мы не увидели. А он был потрясающим: со словами "Ну все, нам надо валить" он оставил гитару и ушел со сцены. Такой вот фестиваль Мамакабо.
