Four-Letter Words
An analysis of the taboo “four-letter word” in the English language, the work displays all possible combinations of four characters in the Roman alphabet. The results demonstrate the size and potential of language as a system (and the comparitively small set of “real” words) and illustrate the relative absurdity of the cultural valuation/devaluation of certain words.
Written in Perl, and then output as a giant 3-foot by 18-foot poster. The algorithm returned over 450,000 “words” and it takes over 54 square feet to show the project in 6-point courier type.
